Stellenbosch
Thorne & Daughters was started back in 2012, focusing on fruit from various old-vine parcels throughout the Western Cape of South Africa. The family of winemaker John Seccombe’s wife owns a hotel in the Drakensberg mountains of the Eastern Cape, and they tasked John with creating a Pinot Noir for the inn, something that would be true to the variety and work with the food. That is when the “Copper Pot” Pinot Noir was born. It incorporates fruit from two vineyards in Overberg, along with a vineyard in Stellenbosch and one in Elgin.
John uses around 60% whole-cluster fruit, and keeps the extraction to a minimum. The wine is aged in old French oak for around nine months. In the glass, the aromas evoke pure red fruit, and on the palate the wine is medium in ,weight, finishing dry with a touch of spice and forest floor. A Pinot Noir that everyone will enjoy.
